Analysing the Adelaide Football Club’s statement on Brenton Sanderson

Adelaide has released the below statement on the sacking of Brenton Sanderson. I’ve added in italics the translation of what it means.

The Adelaide Football Club and Senior Coach Brenton Sanderson have agreed to part ways.

The Adelaide Football Club has sacked Senior Coach Brenton Sanderson but we don’t want to say that. This makes it sound like Brenton wanted to be an unemployed senior coach. Who’d want that?

This follows an extensive review of the Club’s entire football operations.

We talked to a few people and had some pretty strong feelpinions.

Chairman Rob Chapman, Board directors Andrew Payze and Mark Ricciuto, Head of Football David Noble and Sanderson have been involved in the post-season analysis.

They really didn’t like him and a lot of players complained. It’s always good to let the players influence these decisions. That never turns out badly. All the top clubs let players run things. Melbourne has done it for years.

“Brenton is a quality person and accomplished coach, but recent weeks have unearthed a need for change,” Chapman said.

In recent weeks Mark joined the board and Brenton gave honest feedback to the players.

“Both parties have realised they have different perspectives on where we are at as a footy team.

Brenton realised it when we called him in and told him.

“It is a tough decision, but one the Club feels pushes us closer to realizing our ambitions.

By ‘tough’ we mean ‘really risky’ and it better work out or we’re in real trouble. We’re vague on what our ’ambitions’ are because who knows how this is going to work out?

“We would like to thank Brenton for his contribution and wish him every success.”

Not too much success, that would be really awkward. Like, we don’t wanting him going somewhere and winning a Premiership. Just a modicum of success.

The Club is embarking upon a nationwide search for a new Senior Coach.

We know who we’re getting, but we want to lock everything down. Obviously this leaking late on a Wednesday shows we’re not really prepared.

Who would take the job after dealing this way with such a well credentialled and respected senior coach?? Mark Neeld?
