Don't mind us self destructing over here: ARU

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has told Australians not to mind them as they run the code into the ground.

“Sorry for the nuisance with all this weird stuff going on with our coach, our former business manager and Kurtley Beale,” said ARU CEO Bill Pulver.

"Judging by attendance figures and ratings, you probably haven't been paying much attention, still we don't want to disturb you."

Mr Pulver said the code would deal with the issue and then go back to quietly slipping into oblivion.

“This incident is not the norm for us. We’re rarely featured so prominently in the media,” he said.

“We’ll get through this issue and then we can continue our retreat back to our increasingly small heartland.”

The ARU said dismal crowds in Perth and the Gold Coast recently, showed the code was on track to be overtaken by netball by 2020.

“Our aim to return to our amateur roots and teams consisting only of lawyers and doctors. Our strategy is progressing faster than we could have ever hoped.”

“The days of John Eales and the Wallabies appealing to all Australians are thankfully in our rear mirror.”

Mr Pulver said the Wallabies dismal showing in Argentina showed any hope of a World Cup boost to the code’s popularity appeared slim.

“Australians seem to be getting a little tired of a sport whose pinnacle is losing to New Zealand annually.”
